Study: After 10 Years, Industry No Closer to Personal Health Records

A study of the personal health record market suggests the healthcare industry is no closer to a "true" personal health record than it was five or 10 years ago, according to CSC.

CSC experts say major barriers need to be overcome, and behavioral changes and wider adoption need to take place in order to achieve a true personal health record. A true personal health record, according to CSC, should be comprehensive, patient-controlled, interactive and secure.

However, the current personal health record landscape suggests the market is fragmented into multiple models, ones that are tethered to the payor/employer, healthcare provider or the patient. None of these three models include all the characteristics of a true personal health record, as listed above, and consumer adoption of patient health records is still very limited, according to the report.
