Chicago-based health startup Apervita raised $18 million to establish an app store for hospitals, physicians and researchers, according to Crain's Chicago Business.
Baird Capital, GE Ventures, Pritzker Group Venture Capital and Math Venture Partners are backing the 2-year-old startup, which provides a platform for healthcare organizations to license software, algorithms, apps and other intellectual property to other institutions. For example, one hospital could license another hospital an algorithm developed to analyze the EHR and pinpoint high-risk patients in need of specific types of treatment.
More than 10 hospitals are set to pay thousands of dollars to subscribe for the exchange, including Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic and U.K. hospitals in Norfolk and Suffolk, according to the report. Apervita will also take a share of royalties and payments for technologies licensed on the exchange.
Funds will go toward hiring staff, which is set to double for the second year in a row, according to the report. Apervita currently employs 20 people.
