A new report, "Best Practices: Establishing Sustainable Health Information Exchange," by IDC Health Insights, an advisory services and market research firm, provides guidelines for establishing a health information exchange based on insight from experienced executives, according to a Healthcare Payer News report.
The report was based on interviews with 50 executives from enterprise, regional and statewide HIE organizations.
Key findings from the report include:
• Healthcare organizations should deploy HIE capabilities to facilitate patient-centric care collaboration;
• Health information organizations should work closely with stakeholders and communicate well to obtain their trust. Trust is integral to a successful outcome;
• HIE organizations should anticipate that resolving privacy and security issues takes longer than resolving technology issues. Thus, organizations should not delay in the planning and implementation process if they want to maximize meaningful use incentives for EHR use.
