Data breaches at healthcare organizations could cost the U.S. healthcare industry an estimated average of $6.5 billion each year, according to a Ponemon Institute news release.
The estimated cost of data breaches to the healthcare industry is based on the experiences of respondents to a Ponemon Institute survey. The report, "Second Annual Benchmark Study on Patient Privacy and Data Security," includes responses from 72 healthcare organizations on self-reported benchmark surveys.
Seventy-three percent of the organizations said they lack the necessary resources to prevent or detect data breaches of patient information. Only 22 percent of respondents have sufficient budgets to minimize data breaches, and 53 percent of respondents said the lack of budget is their biggest weakness in preventing data breaches.
