Report: Amazon to lay off as many as 20,000 employees

The workforce reduction at Amazon is now expected to number about 20,000 people, Computerworld reported Dec. 2.

Amazon has said it is laying off staff in such departments as devices and books into 2023 to deal with the shifting economic conditions for tech companies. The New York Times reported Nov. 14 that the layoffs would affect roughly 10,000 people.

Corporate managers have been told in recent days to identify employees with performance issues to meet the new numeric goal, unnamed sources told Computerworld. The job cuts would affect tech staffers and corporate executives and equal about 6 percent of Amazon's corporate staff or a roughly 1.3 percent of its total workforce.

The tech giant declined to comment to the news outlet beyond CEO Andy Jassy's Nov. 17 statement.
