Providence Health Initiates Layoffs to Offset New EMR-Related Hires

Spokane, Wash.-based Providence Health and Services has initiated layoffs at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, Mont., and St. Joseph Medical Center in Polson, Mont., in part to offset new employees hired to maintain the electronic medical record system.

"As new jobs have been added over the past year – some in association with our new EMR system – we’ve had to make tough decisions around functions and positions we can no longer afford," wrote hospital officials in a statement.

There will be no across-the-board layoffs; instead each department will responsible for its own restructuring. The hospital did not disclose the number of positions to be eliminated.
