Englewood, Colo.-based Centura Health has notified 1,000 patients their personal and health information was compromised through a phishing scheme, according to a Durango Herald report.
A series of fraudulent emails — appearing to be from a trustworthy source — were sent to Centura Health employees in February, and were used to acquire employees' usernames and passwords and access their email accounts
The accessed accounts contained emails including the affected patients' names, Social Security numbers, Medicare beneficiary numbers, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, medical record numbers and clinical information.
After learning of the breach to its system, Centura Health performed an internal investigation with the assistance of a forensics expert and notified authorities, according to the report.
