The HealthShare Exchange of Southeastern Pennsylvania, a health information exchange that will cover a five-county area around Philadelphia, expects to officially launch in the third quarter of 2014.
The HIE facilitated its first exchange of a patient's clinical summary in December 2013 when the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia sent a continuity of care document to a physician at Springfield, Pa.-based Crozer-Keystone Health System. Test transmissions continued successfully through February.
Thirty-four hospitals and three health plans are currently members of HSESEPA.
