A bill by U.S. Representative Tom Marino (R-Pa.) that would provide legal protection to electronic record users has been met with some opposition, according to a Times Leader report.
Rep. Marino's bill, Safeguarding Access for Every Medicare Patient Act, would grant legal immunity to physicians reporting medical errors caused by electronic medical record malfunctions. Opponents say this protection would remove incentives for vendors and others in the healthcare community to make necessary improvements to the record system. They also claim the bill would take away patients' right to seek compensation.
However, supporters say the bill would help implement some of the Institute of Medicine's recommendations, outlined in a recent report, about creating a system for reporting EMR errors.
