Seventy-eight percent of healthcare professionals expect health IT companies to "somewhat," or "significantly," increase by 2020, according to Venrock's 2019 Healthcare Prognosis report.
In March 2019, Venrock surveyed more than 250 respondents from health IT startups, healthcare providers and insurance companies, among other organizations, about the future of health IT.
Three insights:
1. When asked which health IT subsectors will experience both "rapid" and "some growth," by 2020, survey respondents said analytics and big data (94 percent) and telemedicine (93 percent) would lead.
Growth predictions among the rest of the subsectors were as follows: digital preventive care and wellness programs (90 percent), wearables/consumer sensors (86 percent), accountable care organizations (75 percent), insurance (73 percent) and EHRs (44 percent).
2. Forty-eight percent of respondents consider the Apple Watch as another consumer product, while 45 percent of participants think the device will serve as a popular biometric sensor and activity tracker for remote monitoring of seniors.
3. When asked about artificial intelligence's impact on healthcare, 53 percent of participants said it hasn't happened yet but they are "hopefully," still waiting. Thirty-nine percent of respondents think AI has had marginal effects.
