Palmetto Health integrates NARxCHECK into Cerner EHR to prevent prescription drug abuse

Columbia, S.C.-based Palmetto Health is making an effort to curb prescription drug abuse with a new prescription monitoring platform.

The health system is integrating Appriss' NARxCHECK platform into its EHR. The platform uses an algorithm to assess a patient's controlled substance history using data from state prescription monitoring programs. It then computes a score and highlights possible issues with overuse or abuse of prescription drugs.

"Our physicians are very happy with the ability to identify potential prescription drug abuse in seconds, directly within the EHR," said Tripp Jennings, MD, system vice president and medical informatics officer of Palmetto Health. "Our emergency department physicians are seeing time savings from the NARxCHECK program, too. We're working together with Cerner to add even more functionality for the solution and we realize more use cases for the offering. Overall, this is a win for everyone involved."
