Oscar now covers Cardiogram's wearable heart-monitoring tech: 4 things to know

Oscar Health, the New York City-based insurance company, announced that it will now provide coverage for the use of Cardiogram Care, the artificial intelligence-driven heart rate-tracking software from a tech startup based in San Francisco.

Here are four things to know about the partnership.

1. Participating Oscar users will be prompted to register their member ID with the Cardiogram app, which analyzes heart rate data gathered by compatible Apple Watch, Garmin and WearOS by Google wearables.

2. If Cardiogram's DeepHeart algorithms detect an elevated risk of diabetes or atrial fibrillation, Oscar members will be given a confirmatory test at home or in a nearby lab; positive results will guide patients to an in-network physician. Members will have access to Cardiogram's preventative monitoring and testing with no co-pay or deductible.

3. The DeepHeart AI has been proven in several clinical studies to accurately detect signs of multiple chronic conditions based on data collected by the heart rate sensor in popular smartwatches.

4. "By working with Cardiogram, we can get more patients to the treatments they need using devices they already own, delivering a fundamentally better type of health insurance today and preventing costly complications tomorrow," Nikita Singareddy, operations and strategy analyst at Oscar, said in a statement.
