Oregon Health & Science University to Develop Innovative EHR Simulations With $1M Grant

Oregon Health & Science University in Portland received a $1 million grant to fund research aiming to address challenges with electronic health records and create smarter EHR systems.

The grant was awarded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Jeffrey Gold, MD, principal investigator on the grant, will work with William Hersh, MD, professor and chair of the department of medical informatics and clinical epidemiology at OHSU, and the OHSU informatics team to develop a simulation environment based on real intensive care unit cases, according to the report.

The research team will build in errors or changes in a hypothetical patient's condition to test if users can catch them. These simulations will help determine how clinicians interact with the considerable amount of data contained in EHRs. Dr. Gold will then harness the findings to improve EHRs by developing ways to clearly organize patient information in a practical and meaningful way, according to the release.
