Several congressmen called for the Office of Personnel Management IT leaders to be dismissed after the federal government data breach. Before any such action could be taken, Katherine Archuleta, director of the OPM, went to the White House and informed President Barack Obama of her decision to resign, according to The New York Times.
Ms. Archuleta has been under pressure to resign since announcing two separate, but related, data breaches that impacted more than 20 million people. She has led the OPM as director since November 2013.
Beth Cobert, deputy director of management at the OPM, will take on Ms. Archuleta's responsibilities until a replacement is found, according to the report.
The large-scale breach has already sparked legal action. The American Federation of Government Employees, the largest federal workers union, filed a class action lawsuit against the government. The AFGE lawsuit calls for a jury trial for OPM Director Katherine Archuleta and OPM CIO Donna Seymour.
