The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT intends to publish a proposed rule that would promote the use of existing metadata standards, which assist health information exchanges, according to a Government Health IT report.
National Health IT Coordinator Farzad Mostashari, MD, said the ONC's hope is to have "an opportunity and process to share input from the broadest range of stakeholders possible" before standards and certification criteria for stage 2 of meaningful use roll out, the report said.
The report said the ultimate goal of metadata within health IT is to establish a universal exchange language, which can make sharing health information among healthcare providers reliable and effective.
