The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT has announced the launch of a collaborative project to improve patient matching and identification across disparate systems.
The project seeks to identity best practices and most commonly used patient identification methods from both private health systems and government entities. The end goal is improved patient safety, care coordination and efficiency.
Participants in the project include federal agencies, the College of Healthcare Management Executives, the Health Information Management Systems Society, the Bipartisan Policy Center, HealtheWay and the EHR/HIE Interoperability Work Group, as well as various large integrated healthcare delivery networks and health information exchange organizations. Later this year, these partners will report their recommendations for improved patient matching to the ONC.
