The Office of the National Coordinator has awarded $80 million in funding to boost meaningful use initiatives, according to a Healthcare IT News report.
Regional extension centers, which were launched to offer healthcare providers assistance in achieving meaningful use, will receive $32 million to boost outreach to physicians, promote registration to the electronic health record incentive program and provide direct staff assistance to physicians.
Another $16 million in funding will go toward 10 state health information exchanges to encourage breakthroughs in technology that would support the HIEs. The grants, which could individually be between $1 million and $2 million, will focus on several areas, including specific health goals, improved care transitions and queries for patient care.
The ONC has also awarded $32 million to community colleges with training programs for health IT specialists.
