ONC Announces First Version of Software Allowing Simple Exchanges

The Office of the National Coordinator has announced the first version of software that will allow healthcare providers to engage in simple information exchanges, a crucial aspect of the first stage of meaningful use, according to a Government Health IT news report.

The Direct Project will be deployed in a series of pilots. It is a streamlined version of the nationwide health information network standards set and is a set of tools and services that will enable providers to share messages and information in a secure, one-to-one manner like an email exchange. Some of the tools and services the Direct Project provides are one-to-one patient referrals and care summaries between healthcare providers, laboratories, registries and patient personal health records.

Patients can also participate in the Direct Project. If they have a Direct Project address, their physicians can send their personal data directly to their personal health records, or the patient can send information from their personal health records to a longitudinal record.

The Direct Project is one part of a broader toolkit of exchange models that will emerge at the same time, according to the report.
