New Orleans-based Ochsner Health System partnered with Tyto Care to offer patients access to a remote patient examination device developed for virtual appointments.
The portable health kit, powered by Tyto Care, comprises a handheld device with a touchscreen that guides the patient through the examination process at home. The device includes a digital camera as well as special attachments for examining the ears and throat, listening to heart and lung sounds and taking body temperature.
After completing the physical exam, the patient can log onto Ochsner Health System's telehealth app, which can be accessed via smartphone, tablet or computer, to begin a virtual visit with his or her provider. The patient can upload examination results directly to the app and communicate through video with the Ochsner provider, who can diagnose illness and prescribe medication.
Ochsner patients are not required to use the portable health kit for the health system's telehealth appointments, which are supported by telehealth provider American Well. The health kit costs $299.
