Health IT has brought with it a host of mandates — from meaningful use to the support sunset of Windows XP to the ICD-10 transition and its ever-shifting deadline.
However, the advent of new technologies and a rapidly changing industry also brings new opportunities for healthcare leaders to improve care delivery.
Below, one prominent CIO discusses what he sees as the most interesting opportunity in healthcare today — mHealth.
Steven Smith. CIO of NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston, Ill.
For NorthShore, one of the most interesting opportunities facing healthcare and health IT today is the impact of emerging mobile health technology solutions. I believe this technology will dramatically change the patient experience including how and where we interact with them.
Developing an effective digital patient engagement experience is necessary to meet the expectations of today's digital consumer. Telemedicine (physician-driven) and telehealth (consumer-driven) technologies will require a robust mobile health strategy. Mobile health will provide a great opportunity to improve access to health information for patients and further enhance the connection between patient and caregiver.
