In an article, published in The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety, a panel of medical, human factors engineering and software usability experts, convened by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, has expanded recommendations to improve pediatric electronic health record adoption, published by NIST in July 2012.
In the current article, the NIST panel details how recommendations from the guide can be translated into practice. The panel has tailored the expanded recommendations to EHR vendors and developers, small-group pediatric medical practices and children's hospitals.
The suggestions include having a "one-click" access to growth charts and supporting dose information out to more decimal points, which is critical for low-weight patients. The panel also recommended that EHR system users work actively with developers to help tailor the design of EHRs to their needs.
