The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, AcademyHealth and the Commonwealth Fund have started the Beacon Evidence and Innovation Network to analyze the findings of the HITECH Beacon Community Program, according to an AcademyHealth news release.

The Beacon Community Program is made up of 17 communities and was established to show how health IT can lead to improvements in healthcare quality, efficiency and population health.

The release said the Beacon Evidence and Innovation Network initiative has three main components:

•    Increasing the amount of evidence from Beacon communities to address research challenges and increase awareness.
•    Joining healthcare leaders and experts to discuss hospital readmissions, provider performance using multiple data sources and use of electronic health records in physician practices.
•    Issuing briefs, white papers and case studies based on the Beacon communities to research strategies and trends of the role of health IT.
