Nevada Regional Medical Center blames Cerner for some of its financial woes

Nevada (Mo.) Regional Medical Center has recorded a net loss of more than $5.6 million so far this year. CFO Greg Shaw points to troubles with the hospital's Cerner billing system as part of the problem, according to a Nevada Daily Mail report.

According to the report, Mr. Shaw says account and payer classifications within the system have caused the hospital's billing staff to have to review cases by hand. Chris Crist, the hospital's IT director, said at a board meeting he would dedicate a staffer to resolving the issues with the system, according to the report.

"Service requests, work orders, take a lot of time to stay on top of, and if you don't respond to Cerner within a certain amount of time, they close the request," said Mr. Crist, according to the report. "This individual will be the go-to person to deal with those requests and resolve those 21 problems identified from the [billing] standpoint."

The hospital's financial troubles are also due to lower patient volume, declining government reimbursements and an increasing number of patients' inabilities to pay.
