Nebraska Medical Center fires 2 employees for accessing Ebola patient's PHI

Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha has fired two employees after discovering they inappropriately accessed the medical records of a patient who was being treated for Ebola, according to an ABC news report.

The hospital was treating Rick Sacra, MD, who contracted Ebola after working in Liberia as a missionary physician.

The hospital discovered the breach following an audit of the EMR.

Per HIPAA requirements, the hospital informed Dr. Sacra of the data breach before he was released last Thursday, according to the report.
