Navy contracts Carestream for medical imaging system for hospital ship

The U.S. Navy has selected Rochester, N.Y.-based Carestream's system to store medical images on board its USNS Mercy Hospital Ship.

Carestream, which provides dental and medical imaging systems and IT solutions, already provides IT systems for the government's Veterans Integrated Service Networks, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force.

The company will install its picture archiving and communications system onboard the USNS Mercy, which is based in San Diego. Carestream's system, vetted by the Navy for security, is equipped with voice recognition and supports multi-site reading of diagnostic exams, according to a news release.

USNS Mercy has 80 intensive care beds, 12 operating rooms and a total of 1,000 patient beds. The ship provides care to Navy, Army, Air Force and Marine forced deployed on land or sea worldwide as well as medical services for humanitarian relief efforts and victims of disasters, according to the news release.
