Mount Sinai launches OpenNotes

In a push to improve communication between patients and providers, New York-based Mount Sinai Health System has launched OpenNotes at two primary care offices.

OpenNotes is a national initiative encouraging providers to share clinician notes with patients to heighten transparency and, ultimately, improve patient safety.

Four physicians at Mount Sinai have been conducting a pilot trial of OpenNotes in various clinical practices since December. Now, patients can access provider notes through the system's patient portal MyMountSinaiChart.

"When patients can access their physician's notes, they can better understand their medical issues and treatment plan as active partners in their care," said Sandra Myerson, BSN, RN, chief patient experience officer of Mount Sinai Health System and the Joseph F. Cullman Jr. Institute for Patient Care, in a statement. "This can ultimately lead to improved patient engagement, patient empowerment and communication between patient and physician."
