Microsoft unveils Coco blockchain framework

Microsoft has released the Coco Framework, an open-source foundation on which users can build high-scale, confidential blockchain networks, wrote Microsoft Azure Chief Technology Officer Mark Russinovich in a company blog post Aug. 10.

Microsoft designed Coco for "confidential consortiums" in industries like retail, supply chain and financial services, among others. Unlike traditional blockchain networks — which often maximize transparency to enhance accountability, even at the detriment of some privacy functions — Coco offers a trusted foundation with controlled users to improve confidentiality.

"Our mission is to help companies thrive in this new era of secure multi-party computation by delivering open, scalable platforms and services that any company — from ledger startups to retailers to health providers to global banks — can use to improved shared business processes," Mr. Russinovich wrote.
