Microsoft plans to restructure into two divisions: Devices and AI, cloud

Terry Myerson, executive vice president for Microsoft's windows and devices group, is leaving the company while it undergoes a reorganization that will divide it into two main focus areas — experiences and devices, and cloud and artificial intelligence platforms, CNBC reports.

Mr. Meyerson worked at  Microsoft for 21 years. He oversaw its Exchange and Windows 10 products.

"Leaving fills me with many emotions," he wrote in a LinkedIn post. "But I'm mostly filled with gratitude and optimism — gratitude for the experiences I have had and optimism for the future ahead — both for Microsoft and myself."

With change comes restructuring for the company, CEO Satya Nadella wrote in email — with a subject line reading "Embracing our future: Intelligent Cloud and Intelligent Edge" — to employees March 29.

"Today, I'm announcing the formation of two new engineering teams to accelerate our innovation and better serve the needs of our customers and partners long into the future," Mr. Nadella wrote.

Rajesh Jha, the current executive vice president for the product group, will head the Experiences and Devices team, while Scott Guthrie, the current executive vice president for the Cloud and Enterprise group, will head the Cloud and AI team. AI + Research, the company's third engineering team that "is instrumental in the key technology advances required across all our product teams," will still be led by Harry Shum, Mr. Nadella wrote.

Additionally, Jason Zander was promoted to executive vice president of Microsoft's Azure, the company's cloud platform.

"We can't let any organizational boundaries get in the way of innovation for our customers. This is why a growth mindset culture matters," Mr. Nadella wrote.
