Microsoft becomes first major cloud provider to adopt ISO privacy standards

Microsoft has become the first major cloud provider to adopt the world's first international standard for cloud privacy.

The standard, ISO/IEC 27018, was developed by the International Organization for Standardization. It provides a uniform international approach to protect the privacy of personal data stored in the cloud, according to a Microsoft news release.

The ISO standard ensures consumers are in control of their data, requires Microsoft tells consumers what is happening with data, defines restrictions on how Microsoft can handle data and bars Microsoft from using customer data for advertising purposes. The standard also requires Microsoft to tell consumers about any government access to data, according to the release.
