Medical University of South Carolina Data Breach Affects 7k

The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston has announced a cyberattack that compromised the personal information of about 7,000 patients.

MUSC believes the hackers' target was financial, not medical, information, and the system does not believe medical information was compromised. Patients affected used MUSC Physicians' online payment portal, or made a payment by credit card or over the phone for MUSC Physicians or MUSCHealth, between June 30 and Aug. 21.

MUSC learned of the breach Aug. 22, and immediately suspended the payment portal. A call center and other resources have been made available to patients who believe their information was stolen.
