The number of data breach incidents reported by the medical industry increased 115 percent from 2009-2010, according to a study (pdf) by the Digital Forensics Association.
The report, "The Leaking Vault 2011: Six Years of Data Breaches," provides information on data breaches reported in the business, education, government and medical industries from 2005-2010.
The medical industry's reported incidents jumped from 120 in 2009 to 258 in 2010 — an increase of approximately 115 percent. Similarly, the number of records disclosed by breaches in the medical arena rose from approximately 5 million in 2009 to approximately 9.65 million in 2010. This significant increase is due in part to breach notification requirements of the HITECH Act, which took effect in late 2009, according to the report.
