Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston is notifying patients that their sensitive information may be compromised after an employee accidentally sent an email containing protected health information to an incorrect email address.
The breach affects 648 individuals, according to SC Magazine.
The hospital learned of the incident May 26. An investigation into the occurrence found patient names, lab results and Social Security numbers were included in the email. No financial information or health policy numbers were compromised.
The hospital indicates there is no evidence any information has been improperly used.
According to the breach notification letter, Massachusetts General is updating its processes so this type of sensitive information is no longer handled via email.
