Mass General partners with Google Cloud to build clinical research platform

Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital is collaborating with Google Cloud and ProofPilot to enhance the existing ProofPilot digital clinical trial platform to better serve researchers at academic medical centers and universities.

The revamped software will be integrated into the HIPAA-compliant Google Cloud server and will implement Google's data products designed around the FHIR interoperability standards, according to a press release sent to Becker's Hospital Review. The platform will be easily customizable to fit the needs of researchers at Mass General and other institutions, giving them full control over the email and text message reminders automatically sent to trial participants, for example.

Mass General, Google Cloud and ProofPilot will test out the platform on an upcoming study examining the effects of time-restricted eating on overweight patients with bipolar disorder. The platform is made accessible to these and other Mass General researchers through funding from Google.

"Together we are delivering a platform that will increase the speed and reduce the cost of research. It's beyond 'curing disease.' It's the power to ask more questions of diverse data sets that will provide unique insights and change lives," Heidi Dohse, senior program manager at Google Healthcare and Life Sciences, said in the release. "As a lifelong heart patient and athlete myself, I know that the continued quality of my life is dependant on timely research and the ease of study inclusion for people like me."
