Lafayette General Foundation, of Lafayette (La.) General Health, has successfully implemented telemedicine in the nurses' office at local Ossun Elementary, according to The Advertiser. Now three additional local schools will install the technology in the next 90 days.
The project launched in September as part of a partnership with the Lafayette Parish School System to help keep kids in school and offer them services they might not have access to otherwise.
Students with headaches, toothaches and any other minor maladies can be treated in the nurses' office in 30 minutes or less, according to the report. Nurses connect with doctors using a TV screen, giving them the treatment capabilities of a small clinic. The setup will cost $15,000 to $30,000 at each location.
