Across industries, women make up just 19 percent of CIOs at the top 1,000 firms with the highest revenue, according to a report by executive search firm Korn Ferry International. When looking specifically at tech firms, that number dips to 11 percent.
The report looked at the top 1,000 U.S. companies ranked by revenue. Tech firms had the lowest share of women holding the CIO spot while energy firms had the highest share at 35 percent.
"Having gender equality in the CIO role is already top of mind for CEOs and boards. We expect this focus to continue for years to come as the CIO creates greater strategic impact across organizations," said Craig Stephenson, Korn Ferry managing director of the North America CIO practice. "There is a significant opportunity for women who are successful technology leaders to create even greater impact in an organization, in the role of CIO and in the board room."
Looking at other C-suite positions, women hold just 5 percent of CEO positions and 12 percent of CFO positions across all industries.
However, they hold a larger share of chief marketing officer positions (29 percent) and chief human resources officer positions (55 percent).
