Just 10% of healthcare organizations use data to fullest potential, KPMG finds

Data is said to be the backbone of healthcare, but few providers are utilizing data to its full capabilities, according to a recent survey from KPMG.

Audit, tax and advisory firm KPMG administered a survey asking more than 270 healthcare professionals where their organization stands in terms of business and data analytics maturity.

Just 10 percent of respondents said their organizations are using advanced tools for data collection with analytics and predictive capabilities, and 26 percent said they are still in the planning stages of data analytics. Approximately 16 percent of respondents said they currently use data in strategic decision making and 28 percent use data warehouses to track performance indicators.

"Many organizations are not where they need to be in leveraging this technology," said Bharat Rao, PhD, national leader for healthcare and life sciences data analytics at KPMG. "Healthcare organizations need to employ new approaches to examining healthcare data to uncover patterns about cost and quality, which includes safety, to make better informed decisions."
