Several top pharmaceutical and healthcare companies were named among Fortune's annual "Most Admired Companies" list, including Cerner, CVS and Johnson & Johnson.
Cerner came in first for the "Health Care: Pharmacy and Other Services" category. CVS ranked third in the "Food and Drug Stores" category and 45th overall. Johnson & Johnson topped the "Pharmaceutical" category and came in 11th overall.
UnitedHealth Group topped the list of "Health Care: Insurance and Managed Care" category, followed by Aetna and Humana. The Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America topped the list in the final health category, "Medical Facilities."
However, the top two companies overall — Apple and Google — are both branching into healthcare as well. Apple is piloting a mobile patient data app, HealthKit, and is planning to launch its Apple Watch later in 2015. Google has launched a number of health services, including the failed Google Health and a current initiative to perform mass genome sequencing.
To be named a "most admired company," the candidates must have healthy financials, consistently strong stock performance and be well-reviewed in an industry executive survey conducted by the Hay Group.
