IT's talent shortage is fueling more M&A deals

The country's shortage of IT workers is leading some companies to acquire firms to gain their employees, analysts say.

Three things to know:

  1. Employers posted nearly 340,000 unfilled IT positions in January, 11 percent higher than the 12-month average, according to a report released Feb. 4 by IT industry trade group CompTIA.

  2. Mergers and acquisitions have been traditionally regarded as a way for companies to grow or get more competitive, but "segments of companies now see it through the lens of talent acquisition," Tim Herbert, CompTIA's chief research officer, told The Wall Street Journal.

  3. There were 902 merger and acquisition deals in the global IT and business services sector in 2021, a 10 percent increase from 2020, according to a report from merger and acquisition advisory firm Hampleton Partners.
