Is Slack moving into healthcare? Chat app adds HIPAA-compliant features

Business-focused messaging and chat application Slack confidentially filed to go public Feb. 4, and a recent update to its security page signals the company may be exploring healthcare as its next market, CNBC reports.

Four things to know:

1. Slack notes that it is HIPAA-compliant on its security page, suggesting healthcare providers could soon use its app to securely share protected health information.

2. Currently, the HIPAA certification only applies to Slack's enterprise version, Slack Enterprise Grid, and only covers file uploads, not communications.

3. Two people who work at health startups and have discussed the certification with Slack told CNBC that Slacks plans to expand the feature.

4. CNBC suggests that Slack may have a competitive edge over similar, smaller companies since many physician practices and hospitals already use its platform.
