IOM: Health Technology Can Help Reduce Widespread Inefficiencies, Costs

A new report, released by the Institute of Medicine, suggests health technology can help reduce widespread inefficiency and costs.

The IOM report indicates approximately 30 percent of health spending in 2009 — roughly $750 billion — was wasted on unnecessary services, excessive administrative costs, fraud and other problems. Inefficiencies also negatively impact quality. The IOM estimates roughly 75,000 deaths might have been averted in 2005 if every state had delivered care at the quality level of the best performing state.

The report strongly suggests implementation of healthcare technology, such as mobile technology and electronic health records, to eliminate these inefficiencies and create a more sustainable healthcare system.
