IBM replaces CEO with cloud executive

IBM announced Jan. 30 that CEO Virginia Rometty will be stepping down from her role. 

Arvind Krishna, who currently serves as the senior vice president for cloud and cognitive software, has been selected by the board of directors at IBM to take over as CEO, effective April 6. In his current role, Mr. Krishna spearheads IBM Cloud, IBM Security and Cognitive Applications business and IBM Research. He formerly served as the general manager of IBM’s System and Technology Group’s development and manufacturing organization. 

Ms. Rometty will transition to serve as executive chairman of the board through the end of the year when she will retire after nearly 40 years at IBM. She was tapped to serve as CEO in 2012. During her tenure, Ms. Rometty built IBM into a $21 billion hybrid cloud business. 

Under Ms. Rometty, IBM acquired 65 companies. She will be remembered for her bold changes and strengthening the company’s portfolio, according to the news release.
