IBM invests in cloud-based EHR Modernizing Medicine

IBM has invested an undisclosed amount in medical consultancy service Modernizing Medicine, which provides a cloud-based EHR system.

Based in Boca Raton, Fla., Modernizing Medicine uses IBM's Watson engine to power its EHR. With the $20 million it has received in it latest round of venture capital funding, including IBM and other investors, the company plans to use the additional funds to speed the introduction of Modernizing Medicine's EMA Dermatology, according to The Stack.

EMA is an ICD-10-compliant iPad app. It is powered by Watson and will be featured at the American Academy of Dermatology conference in San Francisco.

IBM has branched steadily into the medical software industry through Watson, now operating projects at the Mayo Clinic, the New York Genome Center, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, according to the report. IBM is also engaged in a partnership with health IT giant Epic and healthcare consulting firm Impact Advisors in a bid for the $11 billion Department of Defense EHR contract.
