The push toward electronic health records is affecting care providers throughout the care continuum. American Sentinel University, an online university offering bachelor's and master's degrees in high-growth sector areas, has released an e-book focused on how EHRs might affect nurses.
The e-book recognizes the difficulties in launching EHR platforms in hospitals and calls on nurses "as frontline caregivers" to work closely with IT departments to address potential problems before they appear, such as duplicated orders and managing records from different specialists on different platforms.
Additionally, the rise of the nurse involvement in EHRs is leading way to the development of the CNIO, an executive position where the nurse serves as a liaison between clinicians and the IT department and makes IT decisions, according to the e-book.
