HIMSS' DELTA-Powered Analytics Assessment: How Hospitals Measure Up

Like HIMSS Analytics' electronic medical record and continuity of care maturity models, the DELTA-Powered Analytics Assessment is designed to help providers gauge their health IT progress relative to their peers and reveal where the organization should be investing its resources to advance its abilities.

According to a new report on hospitals' progression up the model, while hospitals are generally working on improving their analytics capabilities, most are still relative beginners at using data to advance business goals.

HIMSS Analytics assessed 22 provider organizations to evaluate their competencies across the five facets of the DELTA model: the breadth, integration and quality of data; the organization's enterprise approach to managing analytics; leaders' passion and commitment to analytics; data analytics targets; and the skills of the analysts.

The assessment found 63 percent of the participating organizations had reached the third stage of the five-stage model, "Analytical Aspirations," meaning these providers see the value of analytics but are still struggling to mobilize their analytics capabilities.

Fourteen percent of organizations are at the fourth stage, "Analytic Companies." These organizations have strong analytics capabilities but still need to begin using the analytic information strategically.

The rest of the organizations were found to be at the second stage, "Localized Analytics." At these providers, data is still siloed and largely used for reporting purposes.

The assessment notes the results may overrepresent U.S. hospitals' overall analytics maturity, as the participating providers are all relatively high on HIMSS' EMR adoption model and may therefore have a stronger overall IT program than other hospitals and health systems.
