HIMSS Analytics has released a white paper discussing trends in the integration of hospital electronic medical records and medical devices, according to HIMSS Analytics.
The white paper, titled Medical Devices Landscape: Current and Future Adoption, Integration with EMRs, and Connectivity, discusses how key medical devices among 825 U.S. hospitals are being interfaced at their organizations with EMRs. Key findings from the research include the following:
• Most hospitals used a wired local area network connection as the sole method of connectivity between EMRs and medical devices.
• Only 8 percent of respondents said their hospital relies solely on wireless connections.
• Potential growth areas are in interactive infusion pumps, fetal monitors and infant incubators.
• Respondents that interface devices to the EMR at their organization report that the ability to automatically chart data from the device directly to the EMR is a primary reason for the interface.
