HHS to Distribute Kaiser's Tool, Enables Translation for Patient- and Physician-Friendly Terminology

Kaiser Permanente, based in Oakland, Calif., has created a tool that will allow healthcare providers achieve meaningful use of healthcare information technology by standardizing data in electronic health records, according to a Department of Health & Human Services news release.

Kaiser's Convergent Medical Terminology tool, which has been donated to the International Healthcare Terminology Standards Development Organisation and will be distributed through HHS, will be provided at no charge to other users. CMT consists of already developed terminology content, tools to help create and manage terminology and processes to control the quality of terminology that is developed. It also includes classifications and standard vocabularies, such as the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine – Clinical Terms already accepted by the U.S. and international health policy makers.

The tool was developed by Kaiser clinicians and technologists to assist the enhancement of standard vocabularies to better meet healthcare needs. Kaiser has agreed to work with IHTSDO and the National Library of Medicine to develop an internationally distributed network of terminology.
