HHS Secretary Sebelius Discusses mHealth-Healthcare Industry Link at Summit

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius emphasized the link between mHealth innovation and improvements in the healthcare system as a whole in her speech at the 2011 mHealth summit in Washington, D.C., yesterday.

She challenged the audience to support all healthcare innovations beyond those that directly involve mobile tools because changes that emphasize patient-centered care will allow healthcare providers and patient to better take advantage of mHealth tools. In turn, mHealth resources can help engage patients in their care and improve population health.

"When we talk about mobile health, we are talking about taking the biggest technology breakthrough of our time and using it to take on one of the greatest national challenges of our time," Secretary Sebelius said.

She also urged mHealth developers to ensure the safety of mobile health devices and the security of health information on these devices, asking for collaboration with the FDA to implement appropriate safeguards.
