The Health & Human Services Department has launched a website, where healthcare professionals can sign on to volunteer during an emergency or disaster in their state, according to a Government Health IT report.
The Emergency System for Advance Registration of Volunteer Health Professionals is made up of a network of state programs that confirms the identity, licenses and credentials of healthcare professionals before an emergency situation arises. ESAR-VHP allows quicker and easier registration of medical volunteers, which can include physicians, nurses, dentists, veterinarians, medical technologists, clinical social workers, medical records technicians and mental health counselors.
Healthcare professionals registered with ESAR-VHP are not required to serve if an emergency or disaster situation arises and can opt out when their volunteer service is requested, according to the report.
Currently, the advance registration has approximately 150,000 volunteers from 49 states, according to the report.
