HHS Awards Contract for Office of Civil Rights' HIPAA Audit Program

The Department of Health and Human Services awarded a contract worth more than $9 million to consulting firm KPMG to assist the Office of Civil Rights in the setup of a HIPAA audit program, according to a Federal Business Opportunities notice.

The audit program will verify that covered healthcare entities and business associates are compliant with the HIPAA privacy and security standards, the notice said. KPMG will help develop the audit protocol and will conduct site visits with hospital leadership to ensure compliance. An audit report will then be submitted after each site visit, noting any compliance problems and methods used to conduct the audit, the notice said.
