Healthcare funnels $20B into generative AI

Healthcare is lagging behind other industries in generative artificial intelligence adoption, but increased investments in the technology could soon change that, Politico reported June 29.

According to the report, there have been $20 billion in generative AI investments in the health sector, with most of the money funneling into AI that can aid clinicians, as well as life sciences.

Justin Norden, MD, partner at investment firm GSR Ventures and adjunct professor of medicine at Stanford (Calif.) University School of Medicine, told the publication that the lag is due to the fear healthcare has of adopting new technologies.

"Healthcare systems are like nuclear facilities. They don't want to change. They need to keep running," Dr. Norden told the publication. "There's often fear of change and adopting new tools."
